Drug Commercials

This morning I was with my wife at the doctor and then at Quest Diagnostics for a couple of basic tests. While sitting in the waiting room, I was watching a bit of TV. Now by TV I don't mean Sport Center or The View, instead they have this channel of health information with the Indian version of John Smith (Sanjay Gupta just seems to be such a generic Indian name). As I was watching yet another commercial I was struck with the thought that I just don't recall watching commercials for medications as a kid. I commented to Andrea that I thought that the numbers of aging boomers must be why I get the pleasure of the latest Mirapex commercial.

Speaking of Mirapex, seriously do you listen to the lists of side effects for these medications? Do yourself a favor and take the time to really think through some of these. Routinely you will find nausea and dry mouth. Often you will hear about the potential for bleeding. Mirapex, a medication to relieve restless leg syndrome, lists that one possible side effect is an increase in the urge to gamble. What!!!! I get my leg to hold still, but I have to play blackjack in order to accomplish this? Here is a direct quote from their web-site that patients have experiences "reported problems with gambling, compulsive eating, and increased sex drive." So does the restlessness just get transfered to something or someone else other than your leg? I am just asking. Oh the fun of modern medicine.
